A series of doorways form a passage in Castillo San Felipe del Morro

This photograph is from Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro. The fortifications of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, are a maze of passageways. Give yourself a full day to get to know them. Take your time. You never know what will make its appearance around the next corner. In this case, the doorways lead from one small room to another to the far side, giving the illusion of a passage. The walls are rock covered in plaster.

The Spanish designed the complex to let natural light in rather than rely on artificial light during the daytime, be it candles or electric lights. The light is coming from outside except where I was. Behind me was a staircase going down through the rock to a lower level. Of course, the dungeons and deep passages are different, but up here, everything is next to large outdoor spaces. The white walls make the entire space bright.
