An oil rig sits in the middle of the Caribbean off the coast of Aruba.

Sometimes the middle of the ocean seems pretty empty. But then you come across an island. Or two. And perhaps an oil rig or something that looks like one. If you’re lucky, you can catch it as the sun sets so that it stands out from the water and haze.

This particular rig sits just off the coast of Aruba. Several others line the coast. Petroleum isn’t as big a part of the Aruban economy as it used to be, but you can see the effects of oil on many Caribbean islands. Fortunately, the haze isn’t from manufacturing, but clouds and humidity.
