A freight train passing through the Silver Spring MARC/Amtrak platform.

Train stations are liminal places. They are the gap between standing still and moving at high speed. When there is a train passing through, you can reach out and touch it, even though you probably shouldn’t. Unlike airports, where planes are down a gangway or across the tarmac, trains are right there.

For stations like this one, passenger trains aren’t the only kind to come through. In this case, we have a freight train. Occasionally, you can find a maintenance crew pass by. Regardless of what’s on the tracks, these platforms are great places to get close and make a few photographs without fences or other things getting in the way. You just need to be careful and safe. Always be aware of where you are. Sometimes things aren’t where they look to be when looking through the lens.
