As construction progresses along part of U Street, a chain link fence separates the sidewalk from the street. It also encircles some of the construction equipment. A pizzeria named “Upper Crust” is on the other side. While it’s pretty simple to get from behind the fence to the restaurant, it’s not always easy to conquer the metaphor.
This part of Washington, DC, is undergoing gentrification. While the District encourages developers to build for a wide range of demographics, folks can still find the changes alienating. It’s easy for a neighborhood to lose its culture when a lot of new people move in.
