The shadows across the wall and window shutters belie the warmth of the day in Frederiksted on St. Croix, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Locals offer walking tours of the town. Most of the commercial district is along the water near the cruise ship terminal. But away from the shore, you can find picturesque moments like this where it’s just you, the sun, and the leaves overhead casting shadows on the wall.
The town is recovering since the closure of an oil refinery years ago. So it’s a bit dusty, and it’s a bit small. But it feels like a close-knit community that is determined to make it work. Most of all, there’s beauty in almost every corner. Everywhere is bold color like those in this photograph, though such color seems common in the Caribbean.
